BALANCE IN MOTION BODYWORK
Santa Barbara Massage & Pain Therapy
Asian massage / Oriental Bodywork originated in Asian region of the world, which includes India, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and the Philippines. It involves the treatment of the body, mind and spirit, Due to the proximity of these countries and their long history of shared culture and knowledge, there are often overlapping elements in the various styles of massage in each country. However, much of it is believed to have originated with or been heavily influenced by the Ayurvedic practices of India.
In much of Asia, health is thought to be based on the presence and proper flow of energy in the body. Unlike Western medicine and health care which focus on problems of form and function, Asian medical philosophy is based on treating disturbances in the energetic system. Therefore, it is the intent of the Asian massage therapy to restore the energy balance and proper fluidity. Some forms follow a system of energy meridian lines, while others specialize in the treatment of various specific energy points to impact the body.
Asian massage has continued to evolve and change over the last several thousand years. Many styles have borrowed certain practices from other Eastern regions over the centuries. In recent times, it has been adapted in many areas to include some Western massage techniques, also. For example, a newly coined name, Insight Bodywork, has been given to a style that includes Japanese, Thai, Indian and Western massage techniques. It is floor-based and involves both energy work and vigorous stretching.
Although some practitioners utilize only one style, I have received special training in several Asian styles (Tui Na, Thai Massage, Ashiatsu/Barefoot, Shiatsu and Acupressure) and I select from these techniques as desired to meet each patient's specific needs.
Most energy work techniques require only a light touch of the body (Tui Na), while others will use more substantial pressure on specific areas (Acupressure, Shiatu and Barefoot). Some forms of Asian massage include stroking and stretching components to facilitate the relaxation and healing intent of the work.
When making the appointment for your Asian massage, clearly communicate to me your expectations and restrictions and don't hesitate to speak up if part of the massage is uncomfortable. Always check with your physician if you have any medical conditions that could be worsened by increased circulation, pressure, stretching or rubbing.
