BALANCE IN MOTION BODYWORK
Santa Barbara Massage & Pain Therapy
Many fibromyalgia patients find deep tissue massages helpful. Deep tissue massage is said to be very helpful for stiff necks, lower back tightness and sore shoulders. For more information, download our brochure on Myofascial Pain and Fibromyalgia.
How can deep tissue massages help with fibromyalgia?
I will apply pressure using my hands, elbows and thumbs. The goal is to get to the deep layers of muscle that are causing the most pain for fibromyalgia patients. I use slow strokes with direct pressure to release chronic muscle tension. When there is chronic muscle tension, there are typically adhesions, or band of tender, stiff tissue. These adhesions are located in the muscles, tendons and ligaments and can block circulation. When the adhesions block circulation fibromyalgia patients typically feel pain, limited movement and struggle with inflammation.
Fibromyalgia

When I do a deep tissue massage I am working to physically break down the adhesions. Once the adhesions are broken down, the fibromyalgia patient can feel a relief from the pain and more easily move.
Are deep tissue massages painful?
Fibromyalgia patients are more sensitive to pain than most. Having said that, certain points during a deep tissue massage can be uncomfortable and painful. However, I will tell the fibromyalgia patient to let me know when the pressure becomes uncomfortable.
What is typical after a deep tissue massage?
Typically, following a deep tissue massage, fibromyalgia patients may experience pain or stiffness. This is normal and should begin to go away after a day or so. You can apply ice or heat to the area after the massage. This can greatly help with recovery time.
