Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular Massage Therapy - Balance in Motion Bodywork, Santa Barbara Massage Therapy

What is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular Massage relieves muscle spasms and dysfunction. Typically, painful muscle spasms occur when our muscles lack adequate blood flow, and lactic acid accumulates. For example, a strenuous workout builds lactics acid, which causes soreness in the muscle tissue. Neuromuscular therapy disperses the lactic acid, so the deficient muscle can begin to accept a clean supply of oxygen and blood flow.

How does Neuromuscular Therapy work?

First, I will locate the muscle spasm in the back and then concentrate the hands-on treatment to this area by applying continuous pressure for about 30-seconds with the fingers, knuckles and elbows. The same pressure must be maintained for the entire 30-seconds in order to encourage proper blood flow in the area.

Typically, before a neuromuscular therapy massage begins, I will tell the client to alert me immediately if the pressure is painful. I will often check in with the client during the massage to ask if the stroke pressure is too light, too hard, or comfortable. I will then adjust the pressure according to the client's verbal cues.

Often clients will experience some muscle soreness following a neuromuscular therapy massage. However, the muscle soreness will disappear within a few days and the clients body will feel more relaxed following the treatment.

Benefits of Neuromuscular Therapy

Therapy addresses the following causes of pain:

  • Ischemia: Lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch

  • Trigger Points: Highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body.

  • Nerve Compression or Entrapment: Pressure on a nerve by soft tissue, cartilage or bone

  • Postural Distortion: Imbalance of the muscular system resolution from the movement of the body off the longitudinal and horizontal planes

  • Biomechanical Dysfunction: Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns (i.e., poor lifting habits, bad mechanics in a golf swing of tennis stroke, computer keyboarding)
