Bodywork FAQ
This is YOUR session. Speak up!
Why is this so important? If you want anything changed: pressure, areas worked, position or if you are too hot or too cold ... speak up! You will not hurt my feelings by asking for something that will make you more comfortable. Also, what you requested in one session may be different in another. If you had P-DTR last time you had a session, but this time you want to have some deep tissue massage work done, it's perfectly fine to ask. The goal is to make you well, not have you be uncomfortable!
What should I expect during my first visit?
I will ask you to fill out an online intake form and print out and bring in a history form and a release form. When you come in, I will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on, if there are any conditions needing to be addressed, and to determine if massage is appropriate for you. I may perform certain assessments and testing to evaluate your condition.
It is important to list all health concerns and medications so that I can adapt the session to your specific needs without doing any harm. It is also important to list any allergies.
Do I have to undress?
In most instances, it may not be necessary to undress at all, Thai Massage, Barefoot Massage, P-DTR and NKT do not require you to remove any clothes. If I do need you to undress, I will leave you in privacy to undress and only expose the areas that I need to work on.
What do I do during therapy?
Because Balance in Motion provides rehabilitative bodywork and massage, we will have an ongoing dialogue about what I am doing and what I need you to do. If you want to chat about other things during the session, you are welcome to do so.
How long will a bodywork treatment last?
The average treatment lasts approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet. First-time appointments can run longer because I need to discuss your medical history with you.
Will the therapy hurt?
Bodywork should never hurt. If it does, I want you to let me know immediately and I will stop. Having said that, you may experience some discomfort during the session, and sometimes there will be soreness the next day.
How often should I get bodywork?
Most clients are looking to address a specific condition. Depending on the type injury and the type of bodywork, I may only need to see a few times (this is often the case with P-DTR). If you have a repetitive injury condition, it may be necessary to come in once a week.
How will I feel after my treatment?
Most clients experience a significant decrease in long-term aches and pains. If you have had limited range of motion, you will generally feel that you can move again. You may experience soreness for a day or two after the treatment, but this should subside.
Take a hot shower or bath, and allow your body to recuperate for at least a day or two. Don't do any haevy physical work or strenuous athletic workout to get the full benefit of your threatment!
How many sessions will I need?
Every person is unique, and every condition is unique to each person. It may take one session or it may take several. You and I will be able to talk more specifically about this after your first session and I have had a chance to evaluate your body's tissues. With P-DTR, 1-2 sessions are generally enough to fix a particular problem.
When should I not get a treatment?
You should not book a visit if you have a fever, cold/flu, or contagious skin infection. That's it.
With some conditions it is a good idea to get an approval from your physician before you receive bodywork (cancer, certain heart conditions, pregnancy). This doesn't mean you can't get bodywork. But its always better to err on the side of caution. I can advise you about your specific needs.
